No to EDL/SDL/BNP! Glasgow Antifascist Demonstration 14th Nov 2009

Glasgow anti-fascist and anti-racist demonstrators held several marches on 14th Nov 2009, beginning with a feeder march in the morning organised by the SSP. This march later joined the main rally and march organised by Scotland United Against Racism and Fascism. The reason for the marches was the unwelcome planned visit by the racist so-called «Scottish Defence League» or «SDL». There is a version of the racist organisation in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England which organises racist and bigoted attacks on Blacks or non-protestants. Each «Defence League» is preceded by the name of where they operate, only the one in Northern Ireland is preceded by the name «Ulster». The English, Welsh and Scottish versions are modelled on the notorious UDL in northern Ireland, only in the rest of Britain it is Blacks rather than Catholics whom they have terrorised. The Scottish police were naturally expecting trouble when this bunch of racists arrived in Glasgow (there seemed to be very few that were from Scotland leading to speculation as to whether a Scottish branch of the organisation exists.) Nevertheless, there was a very real danger that this bunch of neo-nazis could descend on Glasgow and attack, harass or even murder people from ethnic minority communities. They had planned to march on the mosque, but the police, fearing trouble between neo-nazi SDL or BNP types and antifascist antiracists, contained the fascist group and refused to let them march on the mosque.
